The 10 main BDS categories

BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) is a global campaign that seeks to isolate Israel in the economic, academic, cultural, and political spheres. While it presents itself as a human rights movement, critics argue that BDS promotes division, ignores Israeli security concerns, and often veers into antisemitism.

Here are the 10 main BDS categories and offers pro-Israel responses.

1. Economic Boycott

BDS Tactic: Pressures companies to cut ties with Israel or cease operations in the West Bank.

Pro-Israel Response: These boycotts harm both Israelis and Palestinians economically and undermine coexistence. Many targeted businesses employ both populations and help build shared prosperity.

2. Cultural Boycott

BDS Tactic: Urges artists and performers to avoid Israel or cancel scheduled events.

Pro-Israel Response: Culture should build bridges, not burn them. Cultural boycotts suppress creativity and exchange and punish Israeli citizens for their government's policies.

3. Student Solidarity

BDS Tactic: Pushes for university divestment and campus activism against Israel.

Pro-Israel Response: These campaigns often simplify complex issues and create hostile environments for Jewish and Israeli students. True solidarity promotes dialogue and academic engagement—not exclusion.

4. Say No to Pinkwashing

BDS Tactic: Claims Israel uses LGBTQ+ rights to distract from its treatment of Palestinians.

Pro-Israel Response: Israel’s record on LGBTQ+ rights is real and progressive. Calling it “pinkwashing” erases genuine civil rights accomplishments and politicizes identity.

5. Academic Boycott

BDS Tactic: Encourages institutions to cut academic ties with Israel.

Pro-Israel Response: Academic boycotts undermine freedom of thought and discriminate based on nationality. Academia should remain open, collaborative, and apolitical.

6. Right to Boycott

BDS Tactic: Frames BDS as a free speech issue, or Apartheid free zones.

Pro-Israel Response: While free speech is vital, BDS activity crosses into discrimination. Anti-BDS laws aim to prevent taxpayer funds from supporting efforts that target one country unfairly. AFZ are a lie.

7. Trade Union Solidarity

BDS Tactic: Pressures unions to support BDS and sever cooperation with Israeli counterparts.

Pro-Israel Response: These campaigns politicize labor and harm working relationships that benefit both Israelis and Palestinians. Trade should foster cooperation—not division.

8. Greenwashing Apartheid

BDS Tactic: Claims Israel hides oppression behind environmental innovation.

Pro-Israel Response: Israel is a leader in sustainability and water tech. Discrediting environmental progress based on politics ignores global needs and shared innovation.

9. Local Governments

BDS Tactic: Pressures city councils and municipalities to pass divestment or boycott resolutions.

Pro-Israel Response: These symbolic actions rarely reflect community consensus and can trigger backlash, legal issues, and accusations of antisemitism.

10. Sports Boycott

BDS Tactic: Advocates banning Israeli athletes or canceling events hosted in Israel.

Pro-Israel Response: Sports should unite, not divide. Targeting athletes based on nationality is discriminatory and contrary to the spirit of international competition.
