To survive, I created rules for myself.
Rule number one: be patient. Every day I told myself, “Just one more day. Don’t think further.” Patience was my lifeline.
Rule number two: find common ground. I spoke with my captor about faith, about the Torah and the Quran. It reminded me that humanity can exist even in darkness.
Rule number three: anger destroys you. You cannot survive on anger. I allowed myself to feel it sometimes, but then I let it go.
Rule number four: keep the mind working. My engineering background saved me. I counted steps, collected data, built a small light from broken cables. I planned escape routes in my head. I told myself, “You will not let others decide your destiny.”
If I learned one thing in the tunnel, it is this: everything can be taken from you — your freedom, your name, your time, your body — but no one can take your mind and your humanity. That is where survival begins.
