REPORT: Actions and Convictions of Marwan Barghouti



Organizational Leadership and Affiliations
During the Second Intifada (2000–2005), Marwan Barghouti served in direct leadership roles for armed factions that carried out campaigns of suicide bombings and shooting attacks against Israeli citizens. Specifically, his roles included:
- Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade: Barghouti was the founder and a senior official of this designated terrorist group, which orchestrated mass-casualty attacks against Israelis. 
- Tanzim: Barghouti served as the head of this armed faction within Fatah, directing attacks on Israeli civilians.

Criminal Convictions and Victims
Barghouti was tried and convicted in an Israeli district court on five separate counts of murder of innocent civilians. The specific victims of the attacks he orchestrated are:

- Tsibouktsakis Germanus: A Greek monk, murdered in Jerusalem on June 12, 2001.
- Yoela Hen: Murdered in Jerusalem on January 15, 2002.
- Eli Dahan: Murdered in Tel Aviv on March 5, 2002.
- Yosef Habi: Murdered in Tel Aviv on March 5, 2002.
- Salim Barakat: Murdered in Tel Aviv on March 5, 2002.

Legal and Incarceration Status
- Acquittals: In addition to his five murder convictions, Barghouti was indicted for 21 other counts of murder across 33 separate attacks. He was acquitted of these specific charges due to a lack of sufficient evidence connecting him directly to those specific events.
- Court Conduct: Court records indicate he showed no remorse for the murders during his trials.
- Incarceration: He remains incarcerated in an Israeli prison, where he has since completed his Ph.D. 
- Financial Status: Despite his incarceration, Barghouti continues to receive a regular salary from the Palestinian Authority. Projections indicate that by age 85, he will have received approximately $1,000,000 in PA compensation for his actions.
