How many registered Islamic organizations are there in France, the UK or Israel, and how has that changed since 2000?
The Center for the Study of Political Islam International (CSPII) publishes map timelines that answer this from its own registry research. We went through all 15 country maps on the CSPII site and summarized what they show.
Key takeaways
- Fastest growth: Spain (×10.5) and the UK (×7.5) since 2000.
- Highest count: France, with 4,351 organizations in 2024.
- Slowest growth: Germany (×1.7), which had the highest count in 2000.
- Smallest counts: the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, with fewer than 25 each.
- Counts by name: CSPII counts an organization if its registered name contains a keyword, so the figures are raw counts, not adjusted for population.

What the maps show
Spain and the UK grew fastest
CSPII's Spain map goes from 172 organizations in 2000 to 1,805 in 2020.
The UK map shows 2,220 organizations in 2020 and 3,676 in 2025. That's about 1,450 added in five years.
France has the highest count
CSPII's France map shows 4,351 organizations in 2024, the highest figure on the site.
Next come the UK (3,676), the USA (2,979) and Germany (2,486).
Germany grew the least
In 2000, CSPII's maps show more organizations in Germany (1,493) than in any other country.
By 2020 the count had reached 2,486, the lowest growth rate in the dataset.
Central Europe stays small
The Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia each have fewer than 25 organizations on CSPII's maps.
The Czech count dips from 23 in 2020 to 21 in 2022, and the Hungarian count from 20 to 18. Poland's map shows 102 organizations in 2020.
Israel's map is the most recent
CSPII's Israel map runs to 2026. It shows 386 organizations, up from 173 in 2000.
The earliest entries go back almost a century
The first entries on the maps are France in 1930 (6 organizations), the USA in 1935 (1) and Australia in 1954 (1). The UK map starts at 0 in 1961.
How CSPII compiles the data
According to CSPII's methodology page:
- Counted by name: an organization is included if its registered name contains a keyword such as "Islam," "Muslim," "Mosque" or "Halal."
- Official registers: the data comes mainly from charity, nonprofit, business and religious-entity registers.
- Not exhaustive: CSPII says the maps cover only organizations in the registers it used, and the project is ongoing.
- Comparability: each register has its own rules, so the counts may not be directly comparable between countries.
- Raw counts: the figures are not adjusted for population or for the size of each country's Muslim community.
About CSPII
CSPII describes itself as a volunteer-run nonprofit research organization that studies what it calls "political Islam." Besides the maps, it publishes reports and a terrorism attack database.
Its framing is disputed by critics, including a number of academics. The figures in this article are reported as they appear on CSPII's site.
Final thoughts
CSPII's maps show the number of registered Islamic organizations rising in all 15 countries since 2000, by anywhere from about 1.7 times to more than 10 times.
